Labor Day may mark the unofficial end of summer, but it certainly does not mark the end of golf in Chicago. The Chicago golf season has stretched well into October and even November, giving golfers more time to play, practice, and enjoy some of the best conditions of the year. As many golfers begin hanging up their clubs after Labor Day, those who keep playing can take advantage of milder temperatures, more available tee times, and less crowded courses.
There is something different about a Chicago golf course in the fall. Cooler temperatures can make walking 18 holes more comfortable, while fewer players on the course can help keep rounds moving.
Post-Labor Day golf can offer:
• More available and flexible tee times
• Less crowded fairways and potentially faster rounds
• Comfortable temperatures for walking and practicing
• Beautiful fall scenery throughout Chicagoland
• Extra opportunities to work on your game before winter
The leaves do add one classic fall challenge - finding your golf ball. You may lose a few beneath the autumn foliage, but you also might find a few while searching. Some golfers could even judge the success of their round by whether they leave the course with more golf balls than they started with.
Chicago weather is unpredictable, but fall golf should not be dismissed too quickly. Current seasonal forecasts do not strongly favor an unusually warm or cold Chicago fall, while the developing El Niño pattern may contribute to milder conditions later in the year.
That does not guarantee perfect golf weather every weekend, but it is another reason not to put the clubs away simply because Labor Day has passed. There can still be plenty of quality golf ahead.
Fall is also an ideal time to work on your game with professional golf instruction in Chicago. Instead of waiting until spring to address swing mechanics, consistency, ball striking, or other areas of your game, you can make meaningful improvements now and carry that progress into next season.
I offer private golf lessons at Diversey Driving Range in Lincoln Park, where golfers can work on their swing in a focused outdoor practice environment. The covered and heated hitting areas also help extend the outdoor practice season as temperatures cool.
Golf lessons are also available at Swing Suite 900 in Chicago’s Gold Coast. This indoor setting allows us to continue working on your swing and overall game throughout the fall and winter, so you do not have to lose momentum when outdoor conditions change. Whether you want to improve your ball striking, develop a more consistent swing, or simply enjoy your rounds more, fall is a valuable time to sharpen your skills.
